Personality:

Bro Strider is one of the most mysterious, badass and frigidly cool characters to grace a web comic. He shrouds himself underneath layers of ironic gestures and ninja tactics, playing mind games and earning a good living through a puppet pornography website. The patented Strider irony is a complicated system of deviating from what most people consider cool and gravitating towards weird interests and hobbies and completely owning it. Irony is basically the opposite of a literal meaning, so in essence the Striders insincerely take interest in unusual things or speak twisted words that mostly only make sense to them, as well as make weird and underhanded gestures to express some strange, convoluted and only partially sentimental meaning, for the sake of humor and some deeply seeded code of awesome that few can understand. And according to Dave, Bro constantly transcends the levels of irony with his mysterious and awesome ways.

He is the picture of aloof, calm and collected, too cool to have or express much of a reaction to crazy things like meteors trying to kill his kid brother or an overpowered Jack Noir with wings, tentacles and a dog head. No, Bro Strider handles his shit, taking everything in stride as it comes at him and he has never been seen to falter except when he was killed. Even then the exact circumstances of his death are a mystery. However, his constant state of careful calm and detached capability, while painting a picture of a strong person that his brother can look up to (and did), it also means he handles emotions poorly and consequently sent his brother the unhealthy message that it's not okay to feel. This is clearly seen when Dave finds his brother's body and won't admit he's sad, won't cry or say that he loved his brother when asked. It was Bro who taught Dave to act that way by being a constant mystery to his bother, always expressing his affection in strange and unconventional ways that loses something in translation.

However, there is no doubt that he cares a lot about Dave. Loves him, even. It's clear in the way he spent so much of his young adult life dedicated to taking care of the kid and teaching him everything he can about fighting and self defense and music and whatever else he had to pass on. Early on in the story, Dave's narration revealed that Bro also kept track of Dave's websites, like his web comic Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff and whatever else he does, and Bro didn't hide this from Dave. In turn, Dave kept tabs on all of Bro's projects as well. They also seemed to have a strangely comfortable rapport with each other despite the oddness of their dynamic, as was seen when Dave built a fort out of turn tables and cement blocks, he mused that he and his Bro would be fist bumping over how awesome it was as they sat under it, if Bro was around at the time.

Furthermore, their apartment is one-bedroom and Bro gave Dave the privacy of the bedroom opting to take the futon in the living area. While this could simply be irony, considering Bro makes enough money to afford much more space, it says something about Bro's priorities as well. It shows that he puts Dave above everything to the point where he doesn't even bother to establish his own space in their residence and though he fails to stock the fridge with anything but shitty swords, he gives Dave everything he could need. Needless to say, despite how eccentric and mysterious Bro was, he made it clear that he cared a lot. Of course, though he did care, it didn't stop him from playing mind games and ambushing his brother in the night to the point where Dave had trouble sleeping and has developed a deep seeded phobia of puppets.

While it's all well and good that Dave was such a high priority to him that the man failed to bother with creating his own space, this created a boundary issue. In general, Bro didn't seem to understand boundaries, not just with how he arranged their living situation, but also with what was and wasn't okay to expose a pre-teen to. At 13, it was no secret to Dave that Bro made his living off of puppet pornography, and Bro even kept his suggestive puppet paraphernalia in plain sight in the apartment. Not to mention, he had cameras everywhere to film puppet snuff videos at a moment's notice. Considering how colorfully vulgar Dave's language tends to be, riddled with curse words and lewd sexual references and metaphors, it's also safe to say that he didn't censor himself when he spoke either. The two were known to engage in rap battles as well, so despite how little Bro says in the story, he definitely was the one who taught Dave how to be so crude but own a sharp wit with rhyme.

Finally, as was said above: Bro does a lot in the story, enough to get a picture of what kind of man he is, but he doesn't say a lot. However, as they say, actions speak louder than words. What we do know about how he vocally and textually expresses himself is just enough to get an idea of his voice. We know that he is proficient in rap battles, so when he needs to, he can efficiently vocalize or text something at length. However, what we know of his personality and from a note he left Dave, it would seem that he likes to keep things short and to the point, with the occasional flourish of a casual metaphor when necessary. He's pretty laid back and comfortable with himself so unlike his little brother, he doesn't feel the need to go on and on at length with metaphors and vulgar language to get a reaction from people.

History:

Bro’s origins start in a lab on a meteor on April 13th, 2009, where he was cloned from his own self, becoming a paradox clone that was sent back in time to grow up with the purpose of becoming guardian to Dave. What his life was like before finding Dave in the middle of a crater is not known, but it is made clear by the fact that he was waiting for Dave with a tiny pair of shades, that at some point he learned ahead of time that a baby would be landing on earth atop a meteor and he was responsible for raising and guarding that child as his own. In that lab where he was cloned, his DNA and the DNA of Rose’s mom was combined to make Dave and Rose, so genetically speaking Dave is his son, but seeing as he raised him as his younger brother, he might not have known that.

He brought Dave up to be an awesome ironic ninja child over the course of thirteen years. As brothers are wont to do, they got into tussles, though for them it wasn’t really friendly brotherly wrestling so much as Bro training Dave to be a warrior. He is also shown teaching Dave to use turntables and mix music, so it wasn’t constant battle between them.

Then April 13th, 2009 rolled around and Dave was coaxed into playing the game SBURB with his three online friends. Bro got an extra copy for himself, though it’s been made clear that he and the other kids’ guardians had some prior knowledge of the game, so he probably got it in case Dave lost his. Which he did. Then when Dave finally got around to looking for Bro’s copy to borrow, Bro played some mind games with his brother, sneaking around the apartment and leaving his puppet Cal in random places, and other weird things until he finally left Dave a note instructing him to meet him on the roof. When Dave came to the roof, Bro initiated a strife. They battled and Bro pretty much kicked his kid brother’s ass easily, but even though Dave lost, Bro left his copy of SBURB for him to use anyway and absconded on his rocket board to God knows where.

The next time Bro appeared was to buy Dave some time and save his ass from a giant meteor. Dave was having trouble finishing the process of entering the game, and the meteor was headed straight for him. So, Bro stood atop it and then sliced it in half with his katana, so that the two halves impacted away from their apartment, giving Dave just enough time to finish entering the game and avoid the approaching fallout from the impacts. Bro came with his brother into the game, but Dave lost track of him after the incident with the meteor.

For reasons only known to Bro, he made his way over to the beat mesa on Dave’s planet where he found Jack Noir and battled him. They were pretty evenly matched until Bro suddenly decided to plunge his sword into the floating disc and left the battle. Incidentally, later it is revealed that scratching the beat mesa would reboot the game session, it is not known for sure whether Bro knew this when he plunged his sword into it. In any case, Jack Noir wasn’t pleased with Bro’s actions and took his sword out of the disc before going to find Bro and return it to him so they can fight properly. During the fight, they were joined by Davesprite (Dave’s future self from a doomed timeline prototyped into a magical game guide for Dave). While Bro and Davesprite were fighting Jack, he got an upgrade in power when Jade entered the game and her omnipotent dog prototyped himself as her sprite. This boost in power allowed Jack to kill Bro and severely injure Davesprite.
